How to Avoid Furniture Scams in Kenya: Smart Buyer Protections

Buying furniture should be safe. Sadly, scammers exist — but most frauds are avoidable. Here’s how to protect yourself and shop with confidence.
Red flags to watch for
Prices that are too good to be true for high-quality goods.
Sellers who insist on unusual payment methods e.g. no receipts
Pushy sellers refusing written confirmation of delivery or warranty.
Safe payment practices
Prefer payment methods that leave a trace: M-Pesa Paybill/Pochi La Biashara, card payments or bank transfer. Avoid cash-only deals unless delivery is done.
Ask for an official receipt.

Verify the seller
Social media reviews/Website, and customer photos.
Get references — genuine sellers can share satisfied customer contacts.
Confirm product details in writing
Dimensions, materials, delivery timelines, assembly responsibilities, and warranty should be written and signed (or confirmed by email/WhatsApp).
For bespoke orders, require a deposit (usually 20–50%) with a clear refund/cancellation policy.
On delivery day
Inspect the furniture before accepting: check finishes, seams, and structural integrity.
If something’s wrong, refuse to sign the delivery note until issues are documented, or note damage on the receipt.
If you suspect fraud
Keep all communications and receipts.
Report to the seller’s platform (if you bought through a marketplace), and to the police if necessary.
Short safety checklist
Seller verified? ✅
Invoice & warranty in writing? ✅
Payment method traceable? ✅
Delivery inspection confirmed? ✅
Shop smart — it protects your money and helps support honest Kenyan makers.
